Massage is not just an indulgent treat for yourself (though here is nothing wrong with an indulgent treat!).   Massage is also now considered a legitimate part of management of painful conditions, including back pain.

How Does Massage Help Back Pain?

healingroom1As Dr. Anthony L. Komaroff  explains in a recent syndicated article, therapeutic massage may relieve pain in several ways. It may relax painful muscles, tendons, and joints.  It may relieve stress and anxiety, and may even change the way the brain processes pain signals.

Massage doesn’t have to be painful to be therapeutic, so be sure to tell your therapist what type of touch you prefer (light touch, firm pressure, hard pressure).  Good massage practitioners get good results, so make sure you use a qualified professional.  Our licensed Massage Therapists at Empower Fitness,  Kathi Jackson and Diane Dalton, would be happy to consult with you and answer any questions you may have.

Massage as Part of Your Treatment Plan

Massage should be used as one component of your pain management plan, in conjunction with standard care. Standard care includes staying as active as possible, taking anti-inflammatory pain relievers, getting physical therapy (if indicated), and giving your body time to heal. When added to standard care, massage can reduce pain and speed your return to your normal activities!
