Karen’s Story

Karen is a 55 year old, full-time employed woman who was morbidly obese and decided to have gastric bypass surgery in February of 2005. She lost 130 pounds as a result of the surgery, but eventually gained 70 pounds back. She became very discouraged so she  went to a nutritionist and weight loss specialist, who helped her closely focus on food choices and nutrition. The nutritionist recommended that she also include regular exercise as a part of her healthy lifestyle changes. Since then, she has lost more than 90 pounds, using her combined nutrition/exercise approach. Karen chose to join Empower Fitness Gym for Women in 2013, since it had a smaller, supportive, all-female environment.  Karen started with a low intensity 35 minute routine which included cardio, strength, and flexibility. Over time, she has increased the intensity and duration of her fitness routine and consistently attends the gym 3-4 times a week. Karen feels her exercising has helped her lose weight, stay on track, and – most importantly – maintain her weight loss. Karen was proud to win first place in the Empower Fitness Holiday Weight Loss Challenge last year, and placed second in the Spring Weight Loss Challenge this year; she is motivated by the structure and friendly competition in the Challenges (as well as the cash prizes!). As a result or her weight loss and lifestyle changes, Karen has been taken off all her blood pressure medications!  She has lots more energy and though she’s lost a total of 90 pounds since joining the gym – she’s aiming for 100 pounds weight loss!

What She Eats Now

Breakfast: Dunkin’ Donuts Flatbread Egg White Sandwich

Snack: Cheddar protein snacks, babybel cheese, olive berries, or 100 calorie almond snacks.

Lunch: Tuna, chicken, salad, boiled eggs,  or snack wrap.

Dinner: Spinach, shrimp, salad (no dressing), baked fished, chicken, or crab legs.

  2. Congratulations to Karen. I have observed more than just a phenomenal physical change. Karen has become proud of her accomplishments, happiy, confident and empowered!! It’s a joy to be with her.
